Tronox is a US chemical company and one of the largest manufacturers of titanium dioxide in the world. The company gained independence in 2005 after it was spun off from its former parent company Kerr-McGee and floated on the stock exchange.

The spin-off of Tronox from the Kerr-McGee group transferred major economic risks to Tronox, which resulted from previous environmental pollution from the disposal of toxic waste. A US $ 25 billion demand for the removal of contamination resulted in the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy . A judicial review in 2013 found that Kerr-McGee had improperly shifted his risks to Tronox. In this context, the company Anadarko Petroleum , which Kerr-McGee took over in 2006 and thus became its legal successor, was sentenced to a payment of 5.15 billion US dollars. Tronox was already released from the bankruptcy proceedings in 2011.

The company's headquarters were relocated from Oklahoma City to Stamford in 2012 . In April 2019, Tronox completed the takeover of Saudi competitor Cristal Global . With this transaction, Tronox became the world leader in titanium dioxide.

In addition to titanium dioxide, a substance that is considered one of the most important white pigments in colorant production , zirconium is sold as a by-product of titanium dioxide production. The sale of zirconium, which is needed for ceramic glazes , among other things , generated sales of 293 million US dollars in the 2018 financial year.
