The Tropical Clinic Paul-Lechler-Krankenhaus gGmbH in Tübingen was founded in 1916 as a tropical convalescent home. The name goes back to the Stuttgart entrepreneur Paul Lechler (1849–1925), the founder of the German Institute for Medical Mission e. V. ( Difäm ). His aim was to improve medical care in economically poor countries. In the tropical convalescent home, doctors, nurses, midwives and theologians from various mission societies were prepared for their stay abroad and trained in tropical medicine. Those returning to the tropics could receive qualified treatment in the event of illness. In addition to the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, the Tropical Convalescence Home was the most important specialist clinic for tropical medicine in Germany at this time . Today the Paul Lechler Hospital Tropical Clinic has one of the largest tropical and travel medical outpatient clinics in Germany. The focus there is on the diagnosis and treatment of tropical and infectious diseases as well as travel medical advice and vaccination consultations.

Since the 1950s there has also been a supply contract for internal medicine patients from the Tübingen area.
In the meantime, the 90-bed hospital has specialized in addition to tropical medicine into a center for geriatrics (
geriatric medicine). Another focus is palliative medicine . For the University Clinic Tübingen and the Tropical Clinic Paul Lechler Hospital, 10 beds are available in a palliative ward under its sponsorship . Over 200 employees treat over 2,600 inpatient cases every year. Against the background of the diaconal sponsorship, Christian ethics and a holistic approach to therapy are the guiding principles for the treatment of the predominantly internistically acutely ill elderly patients.

The Paul Lechler Hospital Tropical Clinic is the sponsor of the Tübingen project on home care for the seriously ill , a specialized palliative service for outpatient care for seriously ill and dying people - mostly tumor patients. This model project started in 1991 with the support of the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Baden-Württemberg Cancer Association. The Tübingen project is now the longest-serving outpatient palliative service in Germany.
