The drop screech owl reaches a length of 16 to 20 centimeters and a weight of about 70 grams. The tufts of ears are very small. There is a brownish and reddish brown morph . The face veil is light with a thin dark border. The top has brown, white and black spots, with the spots on the upper coat being bright white. The shoulder feathers have black-lined whitish outer flags. The hand and arm wings are strongly banded. The chest has dense brown and yellow-brown banding. The flanks and belly are white and show blackish stripes on the shaft. The barrel is feathered. The wings protrude beyond the short tail. The iris is yellow. The beak is greenish gray. The toes are pinkish gray. Representatives of the reddish-brown morph are less patterned and the markings on the top and bottom are reddish-brown. Your call is a short, rapid trill lasting three to five seconds, the volume of which increases at the beginning and drops sharply at the end.

Habitat and occurrence

The droplet screech owl inhabits pine forests, pine-oak forests and cloud forests at altitudes of 1400 to 2500 m. It occurs in Chiapas in southern Mexico and in the mountains in Guatemala .

Way of life
