Karlskrona (Trossö) around 1850

Trossö is an island in Karlskrona's Schäerngarten and forms the center of Karlskrona . Trossö is in the southern part of the city. Several other islands such as Sturholmen , Saltö and Långö are part of the urban area. Attractions include Sweden's largest market square, Stortorget, the naval base, the Admiralty Church , the figure Rosenbom and the shipyard on Trossö. Trossö counts how the entire naval town of Karlskrona, the UNESCO - World Heritage .

The island with the protective archipelago in front of it and the ice-free harbor was strategically ideal to build a naval base . In 1679 King Charles XI personally visited the island to see for himself its suitability. It was found out, however, that the island belonged to the farmer Vittus Anderson. The farmer was not interested in selling the island to the king and resisted. It all ended with Anderson arrested and the property expropriated. A folk legend says that the farmer cast a curse on the island before his arrest and therefore burned Karlskrona several times. Anderson finally died in 1688.

A memorial stone was erected in the Nättraby cemetery, west of Karlskrona, where Anderson was buried. In 2012, next to the tourist office in Karlskrona, a monument in the form of a bronze slouch hat by the artist Anna Jarnestad was inaugurated.
