Tru64 UNIX is a commercial Unix - Operating system from the System V family. Based on a Mach - microkernel supports the 64-bit - Alpha - microprocessor architecture. Regular support was discontinued by HP on December 31, 2012. Among other things, it offers support for symmetrical multiprocessor systems (SMP) and for real-time systems . It conforms to the Single UNIX Specification and may therefore have the designation “UNIX” in capital letters.

history

Originally the operating system (still as a 32-bit system) was called OSF / 1 , later it was renamed Digital UNIX (DUNIX for short) and then received its current name Tru64 UNIX .

The current Tru64 UNIX variant was developed from 1993 for the 64-bit alpha processor (a RISC processor). The Alpha processor was introduced by Digital Equipment ( DEC ) around 1992. With the takeover of DEC, Compaq had taken over the Alpha computers including the operating system. Compaq merged with Hewlett-Packard (HP) in 2002 .

With the operating system version 5 of Tru64 UNIX, the cluster technology was adopted by OpenVMS in 2000 . With this TruCluster technology, this UNIX variant had the option of several systems (cluster members) using or managing hard disk and network resources together and using a common system configuration database.

HP tried to merge the Unix systems Tru64 UNIX and HP-UX , but this project was abandoned in late 2004.

The file system used under Tru64 is AdvFS (Advanced File System).

On June 23, 2008, HP released the source code of the Advanced File System (AdvFS) from Tru64 UNIX under GPL 2.
