Inland tanker with trunk deck

The trunk decker , in German often also case deck ship or luggage ship , was a type of ship for tramping that emerged in Great Britain at the end of the 19th century . The name is derived from the design of the ship's hull with a raised trunk deck that extends over the entire length of the hold, but only about half the width of the ship. The trunk deck of these ships designed for bulk cargo transport, which acts like a very high hatch coaming , reduces the risk of cargo being passed over when the hatch is fully loaded by the resulting reduction in the cargo surface. Best-known shipyard for ships of this kind was Ropner Shipbuilding in Stockton-on-Tees , United Kingdom, but was also known that John Priestman & Company shipyard Castletown Yard in Southwick, Sunderland , which built a very similar type of ship shipbuilding technology also to the trunk deckers counting is.

In inland tankers, the elevated deck on which the pipes and tank openings are attached is called the trunk deck.
