The southern military training area (also called Mielec military training area ) was established in early 1940 in the Polish districts of Dębica, Mielec and Tarnobrzeg in the Generalgouvernement .

Its establishment is in connection with the construction of a total of three large training areas for the German Wehrmacht in occupied Poland. These training areas are the northern military training area near Mielau , the central military training area near Radom and the southern military training area near Mielec .

The exercise area covered an area of several hundred square kilometers and was one of the largest military training areas for the German Wehrmacht. The training area was divided into an air force training area (Gorno air force training area) and an army training area. The army's training area was used in particular to practice large-scale combat between combined arms and strong armored units. Within the military training area there were two large barracks complexes, camp I near Mielec and camp II in the area of today's Nowa Deba, each with a siding.

The Air Force practice approaches are made from two air bases in the area, the Mielec air base and the Reichshof air base .

In connection with the Heidelager SS military training area directly to the south-west , there were attempts to launch V2 rockets on the site in 1943/1944 . The site served as an alternative location for the Peenemünde test site, which was destroyed in a British air raid . Thousands of Poles had to evacuate their homes to set up the practice area . The extent to which forced laborers were used in the construction of the square has not yet been conclusively clarified.

The area of the northern military training area comprised large areas in the following administrative districts:

  • Dębica district
  • Mielec district
  • Tarnobrzeg district

On July 1, 1943, these administrative districts and all of their communities within the military training area south were merged to form the Deba military estate district .
