Senninger camp memorial

The Senning garrison training area, also known as the Senninger camp , was located in Senning in the Sierndorf municipality in Lower Austria .

The area north of Stockerau on the L29 was already used as a practice area during the First World War .

From 1938 the Wehrmacht used the Senningen camp - the name has been preserved to this day - with 26 barracks as a parade ground and to accommodate artillery units, as a horse hospital No. 117, for the veterinary department No. 17 and from 1944 for training Croatian soldiers. This training unit was later assigned the remnants of the Blue Division from Spain and then also a Hungarian artillery battery as well as all foreign volunteers released from military hospitals in the area of responsibility of the military district command XVII. German naval units, which were later deployed in the Riga area, also received infantry training in the Senninger camp .

On January 31, 1945, the military training area was the target of an air raid. 70 soldiers were killed in the camp itself, 22 or 23 in Oberolberndorf and 18 or 25 civilians in Ernstbrunn . In addition, 237 horses were killed.

To commemorate these dead, a birch cross was first erected in 2004 and later - on the L29 - a brick memorial was built. The construction of this monument on the street had to be interrupted due to bureaucratic hurdles and could only be completed after the sale of the area and consecrated on October 26, 2007.

In 2006 the property was sold to a construction company from Stockerau. The Stockerau volunteer fire brigade maintains a practice area and various leisure facilities, which are not open to the public, were built by the landowner. The establishment of an amusement park desired by the landowner and the Leader Region Weinviertel-Danube region is questionable. The Stockerau airfield, located in the northern part of the site , was opened in 1978.
