Trypetoptera punctulata is a fly from the horned fly family(Sciomyzidae).

features

The flies reach a length of 6–7 mm. Their distinctive, predominantly dark-colored wings have a coarse white speckled pattern. The compound eyes are red. The head and pronotum are light beige. The light gray colored abdomen has a black line pattern.

distribution

Trypetoptera punctulata occurs in the Palearctic . The species is widespread and mostly common in large parts of Europe.

Way of life

The flight time lasts from May to October. The flies prefer dry biotopes, especially forest areas on limestone soils. They are often found on grasses and low-growing bushes. The females lay their eggs on snails. The hatched larvae eat the snails.
