Tryphon of Constantinople

Tryphon was Patriarch of Constantinople (928-931). He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church . His feast day is April 19th .

Life

Tryphon was a monk. On December 14, 927 (or 928?) He was named Patriarch of Constantinople. Johannes Skylitzes reported that Emperor Romanos I intended the office for his son Theophylactus when he reached the required age.

In 931, however, Tryphon refused to resign. He was then provoked that he could not write his name. He put his signature on a blank sheet of paper. This should then have been used for his declaration of resignation.

Tryphon was mentioned for the last time as a patriarch in August 931. He is said to have gone to a monastery. The year of his death is unknown.

Theophylactus became the new Patriarch of Constantinople in February 933.
