Chebyshev Lambda Mechanism

The Chebyshev lambda mechanism is a four- link coupling gear or crank arm , which converts a rotary movement into an approximately straight movement of almost constant speed, and is sometimes confused with the related Hoecken mechanism . According to Roberts' theorem, this mechanism represents the replacement gear of the Chebyshev mechanism .

The name lambda comes from the fact that the mechanism looks like the Greek letter λ ("lambda") . The path of movement of the lambda mechanism reminded Pafnuti Lwowitsch Tschebyschow of the path of movement of a horse's hoof.

Another name for the mechanism is Chebyshefflenker . Like the Klann mechanism, it can be used to make walking machines such as the Strandbeest .

history

The mechanism was first publicly demonstrated at the Paris World Exhibition in 1878 as " The Plantigrade Machine ".

The original of the Plantigrad machine is in the Moscow Polytechnic Museum .

In the German-speaking countries, due to the year of mathematics 2008, it is also known as "Tschebyscheff walking machine".
