Strandbeesten are kinetic art objects . The name is Dutch and means "beach animal".

They have been developed by Theo Jansen since 1990 . The big theme of the Strandbeesten is evolution. Each generation should be better adapted to its environment than the previous one. Jansen often describes his work and detailed solutions with analogies from biology.

legs

In order to achieve the characteristic running movement, Theo Jansen developed the leg shown in the picture. To determine the proportions of the bars, Jansen developed a computer program on an Atari computer. The algorithm started with random values, then selected the best and in turn generated variants from them ( evolutionary algorithm ). He used the first numbers calculated in this way for the first Strandbeest (Animaris Currens Vulgaris). Since the legs did not prove themselves, he ran the algorithm again. The resulting numbers - which he called "(eleven) holy numbers" - have proven themselves to this day.

The kinematics of the legs is also discussed in textbooks for technical mechanics as an example of four- link coupling gear with crank arm. It is similar to that of the Klann mechanism and the Chebyshev walking machine , also called the Plantigrade Machine .

material

The characteristic yellow PVC plastic pipes (more precisely insulation pipes) were chosen in 1990 due to their very good availability and price. Jansen experimented with wood from 1997 to 2001 and with steel in 2004 but came back to the original material.

Jansen calls the pipes his "proteins".

The plastic pipes on the one hand limit the design options, on the other hand they also inspire Jansen to find creative solutions to problems.

Energy generation and storage

The first models could not move without human intervention. Specifically, the beach bugs either had to be pulled or pushed.

Energy generation from wind has become characteristic of beach bees.

Later generations (2001–2006) also use compressed air stored in PET bottles. He calls these bottles "wind gizzards".

brain

Later generations (from 2006) built in sensors and logic.

Jansen uses compressed air and self-made valves, i.e. pneumatics .

This "brain" enables the Strandbeest z. B. to notice the approaching tide and to walk towards the dunes or to anchor in a storm.

Connection technology

Originally, the beach beasts were held together with adhesive tape. Since that didn't work out, Jansen kept tinkering. Jansen uses cable ties, nylon cord, adhesive tape and silicone gel for today's beach bars.

size

Animaris Rhinoceros Lignatus made of wood weighed 250 kg

Probably the heaviest beach beach is the "Animaris Rhinoceros Transport". It is made of powder-coated steel, weighs 3.2 tons and measures approximately 4.7 × 6 × 5 m.

Models

There are models of the beach bees. They can be grouped into kits and 3D printed models. For Jansen, the models and replicas represent the multiplication of beach beefs.

Kits

Mini strandbeest - Animaris Ordis Parvus

The first kit (Animaris Ordis Parvus) appeared in 2011 in or with a Japanese magazine. The booklet and the building instructions were later translated into English.

In Germany, the kit is available with the English-language booklet (which also contains the building instructions) and the accompanying German-language building instructions.

The English-language building instructions are also available online.

Another kit is the Animaris Rhinoceros Parvus.

3D models

3D-printed Strandbeest models are offered in various sizes. The models can be run immediately after printing and cleaning. No assembly is required.

For Jansen, these models are the next logical evolution.

media

Theo Jansen and his Strandbeest are part of a 2007 BMW commercial.

Theo Jansen spoke about his creation at the TED (conference) in 2007 .

Adam Savage is an avowed lover of beach animals.

About Theo Jansen and his beach animals reported u. a. the television channels BBC, 3sat and SRF (2009).

Magazines and newspapers that have been reported about him and the beach bees etc. a. The New Yorker , The New York Times .

In a 2016 episode of The Simpsons , Theo Jansen was seen as a guest star with a beach beest.
