The Tschornoje Lake ( Russian Озеро Чёрное , "black lake") is a crater lake in the extreme north of the Kuril island of Onekotan .
The Chornoe Lake is located in the northeastern part of the youngest caldera of the stratovolcano Nemo . The lake is 5.1 km long and 1.5 km wide and has a sickle shape. Its water area is 5.4 km². Its catchment area covers 20.8 km². The lake has no surface drainage. The sea is only 750 m away at the north-western end of the lake. The 1018 m high peak of the Nemo rises 2 km south of the lake. Its lava flows form the southwestern shore of the lake.
Fish fauna
In the outflow-free lake, a species of char , first described by Vasil'eva & Stygar in 2000, was discovered - Salvelinus gritzenkoi . Their species status is still controversial, as it could also be just a form of the Salvelinus malma complex.
