Tschugunow Island ( Russian Остров Чугунова Ostrow Tschugunowa ) is a small and icy island off the coast of Queen Marie Land . It is completely surrounded by the Shackleton Ice Shelf and lies between the mouths of the Denman and Scott glaciers .
Aerial photographs of the US American Operation Highjump (1946–1947) were used to map them. Further aerial photos were taken in 1956 during a Soviet Antarctic expedition. The island is named after the Soviet atmospheric researcher NA Tschugunow, who was killed by falling ice with his fellow expedition MI Rochlin in January 1958 on board a research ship in the Antarctic.
