Tsiolkovskiy is a large crater on the far side of the moon .
The very bright central mountain and crater rim form a striking contrast to Tsiolkovskiy's dark crater floor . The rim of the crater is somewhat angular due to slipping. The inner slope of the wall is terraced. The bottom of the crater is filled with basaltic lava , which presumably emerged from the interior of the moon over the course of several 100 million years. Since no soil samples have been examined from the back of the moon to date, an exact age estimate is difficult. However, due to the conspicuous dark color of the ground and the low crater density, it is assumed that the Tsiolkovskiy crater, like the Mare Moscoviense, is younger than the large mare on the side facing the earth. The central mountain range towers over the plain by several thousand meters.
Tsiolkovskiy was discovered in images of the Soviet lunar probe Lunik 3 , which first transmitted images from the back of the moon to earth in 1959. It was named after the Russian rocket pioneer Konstantin Ziolkowski . Today's spelling with Ts instead of Z is, as is usual with all structures on the Earth's moon, based on Latin.
