Tsubaki Chinzan ( Japanese 椿椿山 , real name Tsubaki Tasuku ( 椿弼 ) further stage name : Hekiin Sambo ( 壁陰山房 ) Kyuan ( 休庵 ) Shikyūan ( 四休庵 ) Takukadō ( 琢華堂 ); born July 14, 1801 in Edo ; died August 6, 1854 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nanga school of the late Edo period .

life and work

Tsubaki was the son of a samurai who, as a member of a guard ( 槍 組 同心 , yarigumi dōshin ), was directly under the shogunate. He studied painting first under Kaneko Kinryō ( 金子 金陵 ;? –1817), then under Tani Bunchō and finally, at the age of 17, under Watanabe Kazan . He became his best student and even after Kazan's death teacher of Shōka ( 渡 辺 小 華 ; 1835-1887), Kazan's second son.

Chinzan painted portraits of his painter friends and many other people. His portraits show an influence of European painting, which he was concerned with under Kazan. His other subjects, mostly flowers, are painted in a traditional Japanese way. At the age of 50 he designed two six-part screens, one with the four themes "Orchids, bamboo, plum and chrysanthemums" ( 四 君子 図 屏風 , Shikunshi-zu byōbu ) and the screen with orchids and bamboo, the Ranchiku screen ( 蘭竹 図 屏風 ).
