The Ejpovice Tunnel ( Ejpovický tunel in Czech ) is a twin -tube railway tunnel in the Czech Republic on the Prague – Plzeň railway line . It is located near the place Ejpovice and therefore bears his name. Since it went into operation in 2018, it has been the longest railway tunnel in the country at over four kilometers.

location

The tunnel is located between the Plzeň-Doubravka and Ejpovice stations. The 4,150 meter long tunnel is the core of a 6.4 kilometer long new line between the two stations. The tunnel has shortened the length of the route by around six kilometers, as an arched section of the old route in the Berounka valley has been eliminated. The western part of the old line between Plzeň-Doubravka and Chrást u Plzně has been abandoned and is to be converted into a cycle path, the eastern part continues to serve regional trains to Radnice, which now have a connection to the main line in Ejpovice instead of in Chrást.

construction

A tunnel boring machine made by Herrenknecht was used to build the two tubes, driving up to 182 meters per week. The equivalent of 260 million euros was invested in the construction.

Since it was commissioned, it has been the longest railway tunnel in the Czech Republic. The Droužkovice tunnel, which was opened in 2007 and is 1,758 meters long on the Prague – Chomutov railway line , had previously carried this rating .

The new line shortens the journey between the cities of Plzeň and Rokycany from the previous twenty to eleven minutes. The tunnel is designed for 200 km / h, but the line speed has so far been limited to 160 km / h. For the first time in the Czech Republic, only trains with GSM-R equipment are allowed to run on the new line. In cars with open toilet systems, the train crew must lock the toilets in front of the tunnel passage.

Incidents

On the evening of January 15, 2020, a fire broke out in the first two cars of the Ex363 “Západní expres” express train from Munich to Prague , with the train coming to a halt after an emergency braking in the tunnel. Two passengers were slightly injured and the train crew was able to put out the fire. According to the state railway infrastructure administration Správa železnic, it still has to be clarified why the train stopped in the tunnel despite the emergency brake override. The 38 passengers and the train crew were brought to safety via the second tunnel tube. There was property damage in the amount of 12,000 euros.
