Tunngle was a P2P - VPN - client with integrated Instant Messenger and network browser. The program provided themed virtual IPv4 - network ready which can connect users, for example to common playing a computer game on the LAN multiplayer mode . The software had been in a public, free beta test since September 19, 2008 . On April 30, 2018, operations were discontinued with reference to the General Data Protection Regulation .

functionality

After the client had successfully logged on to a manufacturer's server , a user could search for a virtual network and join it. All participants in the virtual network were connected to one another in encrypted form through a " tunnel ". This process was carried STUN support -like techniques without relaying servers of the manufacturer to also clients behind a NAT - router to allow connection. Within a network it was possible to receive and send TCP , UDP and ICMP packets from and to broadcast and unicast addresses. For this purpose, each participant had an IP address in the range 7.0.0.0/8, which was linked to a virtual Ethernet adapter installed on the client computer .

safety

According to the manufacturer, all connections to the software were encrypted using the open source OpenSSL library with the AES 256 bit algorithm . The keys required for this should be exchanged via RSA 2048 bit.

use

Due to the integrated function for searching for networks, the program is particularly suitable for people who need network connections to other people to be established quickly. This was particularly useful for playing computer games like at a LAN party and for file sharing , as participants could be found quickly and they could communicate securely with one another. Another advantage of computer games was the independence from the game manufacturer's servers.

costs

The use of the Tunngle Basic version was free of charge, with advertisements being displayed to the user. An additional paid premium version was available.
