The Tupinier Islands ( French Îles Tupinier ) are a group of pyramidal islands off the north coast of the Trinity Peninsula in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . They are located 5 km west of Cape Ducorps .
15,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins were breeding in 1990 in the archipelago of the Tupinier Islands in five sub-colonies of 800 to 5200 pairs each. 68 breeding pairs of the blue-eyed shag were counted on three small islands in the archipelago . BirdLife International therefore designates the Tupinier Islands as an Important Bird Area (AQ077).
Participants in the Third French Antarctic Expedition (1837–1840), led by polar explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville, discovered the islands. D'Urville named it after Baron Jean-Marguerite Tupinier (1779-1850) from the French Ministry of the Navy, who helped significantly to get the support of the French government for the research trip. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey re- mapped the islands in 1946.
