Turketel

Turketel or Turketul (* 907 , † July 12, 975 in Croyland Abbey ) was a councilor under four English kings and abbot in the Croyland monastery.

Life

Turketul was a son of Æthelweard and a grandson of King Alfred the Great of Wessex . He was educated in Croyland Abbey and later appointed Lord High Chancellor by his uncle Edward the Elder (871-924) . He regulated church affairs. He also exercised this office under the subsequent kings Æthelweard (904–924), Æthelstan (894–939) and Edmund I (921–946).

In 946 Turketul entered Croyland Abbey as a monk. The abbey was devastated during a Danish attack , but rebuilt with his family's money. In 948 King Edmund I appointed Turketul abbot of Croyland Monastery. He wrote the Chronicle: History of Croyland from 716 to 973 .
