The Rothensee Tower House is a residential building built around a residential tower in the Rothensee district of Magdeburg .

architecture

The three-story tower, built from quartzite rubble , is likely to date back to the 13th century, possibly as early as 1200. A round arched door on the north side of the middle floor and a walled up round arched window also point to the Romanesque period . The tower has an approximately square floor plan of 5.60 m × 5.80 m. At the base, the wall is 1.30 m thick, tapering towards the top, and 0.80 m at the top. The tower's old window openings are mere slits.

Today's cellar has a barrel vault . It is assumed that the basement, which was previously used as a storage room, was originally at ground level and only became a basement over the centuries due to the increase in the floor level in the area. The middle floor has a pointed arched groin vault and a fireplace in the southeast corner. Presumably in the 17th century a flat-roofed storey was added. The individual floors have no connection with each other and were only accessible from the outside. On the north side of the tower there is a two-story half - timbered house , which was built around 1650.

history

The tower was probably built by the Knights of Rothensee , who can be proven between 1225 and 1313. In addition to its function as a symbol of power, the tower primarily served to protect the residents from attacks. Rothensee was in the border area to the settlement area of the Slavs . In this context, there were more frequent arguments. However, the tower experienced frequent changes of ownership. During the Thirty Years War it belonged to a Hieronymus von Wüstenhoff , later to a middle-class family, then to the von Platen family . The tower has been owned by the Gerloff family since 1739 . In the 17th or 18th century, the tower was converted to improve its habitability. In the 18th century there was a fire in the northern half-timbered house.

The tower is also currently used privately as a residential building.
