Tournament hat
In heraldry, a tournament hat is called a flat, red, hermelin-turned hat with an elongated back. In the Middle Ages it was popular as a helmet ornament at tournaments . Today it is only given to peers in England .
In many coats of arms it is decorated with peacock feathers, occasionally with buffalo horns , or a heraldic animal grows out of it. Its color is no longer just red. In modern times it was often used by the noble families of the imperial knighthood as a sign of their imperial immediacy , as it resembled the princely hats.
The beret , the doctoral hat and the toque are viewed as later variants .
