Tux Racer ( Eng . [ ˈTʊksˌʁɛɪ̯sɐ ], Eng. [ ˈTʌksˌɹeɪ̯sə˞ ]) is a 3D racing game in which the main character, the Linux mascot Tux , has to be steered through a snowy ice landscape.
The free software (under the GNU General Public License ) is based on SDL , OpenGL and Tcl and is available for Windows , Linux and macOS .
Gameplay
You control the character on its slide over a slope with snow, ice or rock surfaces, each of which influences the speed and maneuverability differently. Herring must be collected and obstacles must be circumnavigated. The aim is both to reach the target area within a given time and to collect a certain minimum number of pegs.
The keyboard controls the direction (right, left), braking and waving of the fins, which causes acceleration at low speeds or can be used to extend jumps. There is also an energy button that can be used to trigger or boost jumps by holding and releasing the button.
In ThinkPad notebooks that are equipped with the APS (Active Protection System) motion sensor for the hard disk, the game Tux Racer, like the game Neverball , can alternatively be controlled by moving the entire notebook.
The game can easily be expanded with new maps, which are simply described by three raster graphics (for elevation model, surface and object distribution).
history
The history of the program is rather unusual. It first started in 1999 as free software, written as a university project by Jasmin Patry. In 2001 Patry founded the company Sunspire Studios , which should market an expanded, but non-free version of the game. This actually happened, with the company disappearing from the scene a little later. The game became known as free software especially under free operating systems such as Linux or BSD .
Spin-offs
Parallel to the non-free version, a free spin-off was created under the name Open Racer , but it soon fell asleep again. The same happened to the next attempt at PlanetPenguin Racer . In 2007 a new spin-off was created under the name Extreme Tux Racer , which has set itself the goal of creating a free version with the functionality of the unfree.
