Twin it! is a card game by the game designers team Nathalie Saunier , Rémi Saunier and Thomas Vuarchex , which was published in 2017 by the French game publisher Cocktail Games . It is a memory and reaction game based on the pairs principle, based on the well-known memory game , in which the players have to recognize and collect pairs of cards.

In 2018, Twin it! nominated for the French game award As d'Or - Jeu de l'Année .

Background and material

The gameplay of Twin it! is based on the well-known pairs principle, in which players have to form pairs from the cards on display and collect them. In contrast to games such as memory , these are not selected from a face-down card field, but must be recognized in a growing display of open cards.

In addition to the instructions, the game material consists of 135 cards printed on both sides with colorful and abstract motifs, some of which appear only once and others two or even three times.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game the 135 cards are shuffled and evenly distributed among the other players. Each player forms a stack with his cards and places it in front of him so that all players can see and also reach the top card.

Starting with a starting player, the players turn over one card one after the other in the direction of the other players and place it in the middle of the table. This continues until a player discovers a pair of identical cards in the display or in the display together with the top cards in the player's deck. If this happens, he touches both cards with his hands and receives these two cards, which he places in front of him. The player who got the pair starts the next round and reveals another card. The winning pairs are also visibly placed and if a player recognizes a third identical card, he can touch it and the pair already in a player display and win (“steal from the other player”). If, by removing a card belonging to a pair from a player's pile, another card appears, which in turn creates a pair and is claimed by another player, a chain reaction occurs. In this case, the player who took the first pair of the chain starts the next round. If two players claim a pair at the same time and it is not possible to see who was first on the cards, the cards in question are turned over and the game continues. If a player makes a mistake and claims two cards that do not form a pair, he must give up a pair that has already been won.

The game ends when a player has received five pairs or sets and has them in front of him. That player wins the game.

Prohibited pattern

Twin it! can also be played with difficulty for a particularly strong player and forbidden patterns. In this case, the player concerned lays out three cards with different patterns in front of him. He may not form sets with these three patterns, but his fellow players are allowed to do so.

team play

With four to six players, the game can be played in two teams. In a team game, the game itself is played unchanged, but if a pair is found, the team players must each place a hand on one of the pair's cards. If the team sizes are not the same, the variant "Forbidden Pattern" can also be played.

Cooperative game

The cooperative game allows the game as a solo game and as a game with up to six players who form a team and play together against a predetermined time. In this game the players form a deck of cards and set a timer for a fixed time (lat rule of the game is one minute). Then all cards are randomly distributed on the table and all players look for pairs at the same time. You can make arrangements, turn over and move cards. At the end of the game, the sets found are counted and given points according to the rules.
