The cargo ships of the type OBC (Ore Bulk Container) , serial Bella Coola the Mathias theses shipyard are ice-breaking combined bulk, general cargo and container ship.

history

Between 1972 and 1987 28 units were produced in five series (OBC I to OBC V). The ships are used not only for the transport of ores, but also for tramp shipping with bulk and general cargo, as well as containers and rolled pieces / bulk cargo. Hence the abbreviation O re (ore), B ulk (bulk goods), C ontainer. Part of the series was built for the Deutsche Seereederei , the rest was exported to numerous, mostly western countries.

  • The first ship and namesake of the series was the Bella Coola with hull number 101, handed over to Sweden on September 30, 1972. It was operated until 1992 and ran aground on November 9, 1992 as Pegasus off Lu Tao , Taiwan , where two seamen were killed.
  • The last ship in the series was the Fremo Scorpius , built in 1987 with hull number 136. She has been sailing under the name Fani since 2009 .

A large part of the successful ship series has so far remained in service.

Between 1980 and 1982 an additional six units of an MBC type that had been further developed for container transport were built.

technology

The ships are powered by a 8240 kW two-stroke diesel engine of the type K8Z 70 / 120E manufactured under MAN license from the manufacturer VEB Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock , which acts directly on a controllable pitch propeller and has a bow thruster .

The ice-reinforced hulls of the double-hulled ships are assembled in sectional construction. The deckhouse, which is supplied in different versions, is air-conditioned.

The five cargo holds with a volume of 29,620 m³ grain space and 28,200 m³ ball space have a deck opening degree of 76.5% and are closed sea-tight with hydraulic folding hatch covers. If required, 582 TEU containers can be transported. Depending on the version, the ships are equipped with four ship cranes with a capacity of 12.5, 25 or 40 tons, some units were also delivered without loading gear.
