The Kyoto subway ( Japanese 京 都市 営 地下 鉄 , Kyōto-shiei chikatetsu , dt. Kyōto urban subway ) is the metro system of the Japanese city of Kyoto and is operated together with the city buses by the Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau. The operating times are from 5:30 am to midnight, the frequency varies between 4 and 7½ minutes depending on the number of passengers . The subway consists of two lines.
Karasuma line
The Karasuma Line ( 烏丸 線 , Karasuma-sen ) runs from south to north and also connects with the Kintetsu-Kyoto railway line to Nara . The total length is 13.7 km. The opening of the first section between the Kyōto and Kitaoji stops took place on April 1, 1981. The last section, which forms today's route, was put into operation on June 3, 1997.
Tōzai line
The Tōzai Line ( 東西 線 , Tōzai-sen ) runs from the southeast of the city to an eastern point before changing direction to the west (tōzai) and thus crossing the city center. The total length is 17.5 km. The route opened on October 12, 1997 and handles an average of 138,000 passengers a day. The section between Keihan-Sanjo and Yamashina was originally built and operated as an above-ground railway by the Keihan Electric Railway, but with the opening of the subway line it was abandoned and the Keihan operations were withdrawn to Yamashina . For this, trains of the Keihan Railway run in the subway tunnel from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station to Yamashina and on to Ōtsu . However, since the route to Ōtsu is still designed like a tram, full-fledged subway trains sometimes run in the middle of the street.
The western end was extended from Nijo to Uzumasa Tenjingawa (2.4 km, two new stops) from 2002 to 2007.
All stops are wheelchair-friendly with elevators, small gaps between the platform and the train, and the entrances to facilities such as toilets have no thresholds. Each stop has a color code for easy identification. Access to the trains is secured with sliding doors on the platform that only open when a train has entered.
technology
The Kyoto subway uses standard gauge (1435 mm). The line is double-tracked and electrified. The operating voltage is 1500 V DC . The stops are at least 175 m long. The trains consist of 6 wagons and have a maximum speed of 75 km / h.
Future expansion
The Tōzai line will eventually reach Rakusai New Town , 10 km away .
The Karasuma Line from Takeda to Rakunan New Town may be extended.
