The U Bein Bridge ( Burmese : ဦး ပိန် တံတား ) is a pedestrian crossing that crosses Taungthaman Lake near Amarapura in Myanmar . The 1.2 kilometer long bridge was built around 1850 and is considered the oldest and longest teak bridge in the world. Construction began at the time when the capital of the Kingdom of Ava was relocated to Amarapura .

The bridge takes its name from Mayor U Bein , who commissioned its construction. Even today, the bridge is an important link for the local population. As it is visited by many tourists, souvenir sellers like to try to do business on and around the bridge. There is a lot of rush in July and August; then the lake level is at its highest.

Wood from the former royal palace in Inwa was used to build the bridge . Over 1,086 piles were driven into the lake bed; some have since been replaced by concrete pillars.

While the condition is generally good, an increasing number of rotting stakes are cause for concern. Some of them are now only held in place by lateral cross members, their lower part is completely rotten. The cause of the damage seems to be on the one hand floods and on the other hand a fish farming program, as a result of which the lake is turning into a stagnant body of water. Repairs are being planned at the Ministry of Culture's Department of Archeology, National Museum and Library .

The tourist police at the bridge have been on duty since April 1, 2013 to ensure safety and to intervene in the event of harassment.
