U1.27 (also Huge Large Quasar Group , short: Huge-LQG ) is a cosmic superstructure made up of 73 quasars in the constellation Leo . The name is derived from its mean redshift of z  = 1.27; U is the abbreviation for English unit .

Huge-LQG was found in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's DR7QSO catalog in November 2012 .

size

Huge-LQG has a maximum extent of about 4 billion light years (1200 Mpc ) and a mean diameter of 1.5 billion light years (500 Mpc). In terms of size, it spans more than a thousand times the distance between the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy .

With over 3 trillion solar masses, the structure is extremely massive and about 18 million times heavier than the Milky Way.

Huge-LQG is about three times larger than the Sloan Great Wall . Until the Hercules – Corona Borealis Great Wall was discovered, it was considered the largest and most massive known structure in the universe.

Scale problem

It is not completely clear to what extent the structure is actually gravitationally connected. It would be possible that non-contiguous areas just happen to have the same redshift. Whether such a superstructure would still be compatible with the cosmological principle is disputed.
