List of apple varieties |
UEB 32642 , sold under the brand name Opal , is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). The variety was bred in 1999 at the Institute of Experimental Botany at the University of Prague . Like the Luna and Sirius varieties, it comes from cross-breeding attempts to combine the disease resistance of Topaz with the yield and taste of Golden Delicious.
description
Opal has a sweet-fruity taste and juicy, firm flesh. The flesh is yellowish and has fine to medium cells. The skin is yellow to yellow-orange and can be rusty . The fruit is medium high and has a fruit shape index (height / width) of around 0.90.
The tree grows moderately. The branches grow outwards, but are close together. The fruit wood is short to medium long.
Cultivation
UEB prefers soil and climatic conditions similar to Golden Delicious. The tree needs vineyards. UEB 32642 blooms abundantly in the middle of the season and shows little alternation . In Europe, the apple is ready to be picked around the beginning of October and ready to be eaten three weeks after the harvest.
In the cultivation of UEB 32642, only slight thinning seems to be necessary. UEB 32642 appears to be resistant to scab and fire blight , which is a clear advantage over Golden Delicious for fruit growing. The apple yields early and is highly productive. It's diploid .
history
UEB 32642 has been patented in the USA since 2005 and European plant variety protection since 2006 . The variety is sold as a club variety under the name Opal.
