List of apple varieties |
Topaz is an apple variety that was bred in the Czech Republic in 1984 . The winter apple is important in organic cultivation or with direct marketers because the use of pesticides can be reduced due to their low susceptibility to disease. The scab resistance is particularly important. In trade, the spelling topaz is often used instead of topaz .
description
The apples are medium-sized and mostly yellow, but often also have large, red-striped color components, juicy and aromatic, slightly sweet and sour, the flesh is firm, fine-celled and crisp. The shell is naturally greasy, waxy.
The tree grows medium to strong, and has upright to broad-growing forms.
Cultivation
Topaz can be picked in very good locations in Europe from the end of September, usually from mid-October and ready to be enjoyed from the beginning of December. Topaz starts to bear fruit early in life and has a comparatively regular, medium-high yield. Topaz is kept in the cold store until March and in the CA warehouse until May.
Pollinators are Rosana, James Grieve , Retina , Rewena , as well as scab-resistant ornamental varieties.
Vulnerabilities and resistances
Due to the susceptibility to collar rot , an intermediate refinement is carried out first. A variety that is less susceptible to collar rot is grafted onto the base , and the Topaz variety is then grafted onto this. The mealy apple aphid ( Dysaphis plantaginea ), which likes to attack this variety, also causes difficulties with this variety . Longer storage can lead to major losses due to Gloeosporium rot. Another problem is the susceptibility to fire blight , which can lead to infection, especially due to the tendency of this strain to re-bloom.
Mutants
Red Topaz is also common. The mutant has a more extensive red color than the basic form, but is also less recognizable .
