Ruby is a cultivar of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). It is sometimes sold as "Red James Grieve ". Ruby is the ancestor of the Topaz variety, which is widely used commercially .

Description and cultivation

Ruby has a pronounced sweet and sour taste. The flesh is firm and juicy. The mutant Bohemia is less striped and has a darker red.

Ruby grows vigorously with long, strong fruit branches and is difficult to pull as a spindle. The tree has high yields. The harvest time in Europe is early October. The apple can be stored until December.

Ruby is susceptible to speck and gum wood disease and moderately susceptible to scab , but is only slightly susceptible to powdery mildew .

history

Ruby was developed in 1960 at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Prague. It became particularly important in breeding: the Topaz variety, which was also developed from ruby ​​in the Czech Republic, is one of the most widely planted varieties in organic farming today. In addition to Topaz, the Rubinola variety (Prima x Rubin) also comes from Rubin .
