Nico Lange

Nico Lange (born March 23, 1975 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist , journalist and political advisor. From 2012 to 2017 he worked in outstanding positions for the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and has been Deputy Federal Director of the CDU since April 2018 .

On June 18, 2019, it became known that Lange would follow Klaus Schüler in the office of Federal Managing Director, from which party chairwoman Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer later moved away.

Life

After graduating from high school, Nico Lange served as a regular soldier in the German Armed Forces with deployments in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo . He then studied political and communication sciences as well as computer science at the University of Greifswald . From January to September 2002 he worked as a speaker at the German Bundestag . From May to December 2003 he was a lecturer for international politics at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Greifswald. From January 2004 to August 2006 he taught with a scholarship from the Robert Bosch Foundation at the Faculty (School) of International Relations at the State University of Saint Petersburg , Russia.

For a long time he taught political and communication science and international relations at the University of Greifswald, the Faculty of International Relations at the State University of Saint Petersburg and the National University of Kiev-Mohyla-Academy .

Lange is also editor of the online magazine " Eurasisches Magazin ". In addition to German, Lange speaks English, French, Russian and Ukrainian.

Head of the Kiev office of the KAS

From September 2006 to April 2012, Lange was head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's international office in Ukraine. In this capacity he conducted courses for Ukrainian students, journalists, political activists of the opposition. He began his work under the pro-Western leadership of the Orange Revolution by President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko . For the last three years he has been leading political education work under difficult conditions after the pro-Russian and authoritarian President Viktor Yanukovych came to power .

In interviews with German and Ukrainian media as well as in press articles and scientific analyzes, he commented on current issues of Ukrainian politics. In collaboration with the Ukrainian media, he compiled a chronology of the protest movement against President Yanukovych.

The immigration scandal

After public criticism of Yanukovych's government, Lange was briefly arrested in June 2010 when he was re-entering Ukraine. Only after the intervention of high-ranking politicians, including Chancellor Angela Merkel , was he allowed to re-enter Ukraine. After this scandal with the German expert, other foundations were warned by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and pointed out "to the importance of strict compliance with the statutory tasks and the legislation of Ukraine by non-governmental organizations". At the same time, the Foreign Ministry praised the contribution of NGOs to the development and establishment of Ukrainian democracy, market economy and civil society. Opposition leader and boxing world champion Vitali Klitschko described the then Kiev office manager of KAS Lange "as one of his bridgeheads in the West". With his opposition party Udar , he is hoping for the support of the European People's Party and Germany's CDU in the fight against repression by Yanukovych's government .

Head of department at KAS Berlin

Since 2012, Lange has held the position of Deputy Head of the Politics and Consulting Department at KAS. He is also the team leader for domestic politics. His current work focuses on political parties, international party cooperation, federalism, and political planning and strategy. As part of his work, he is a trainer for political planning and strategy for young politicians, for example at the Robert Schumann Institute in Budapest in summer 2013 . Nico Lange is involved in a KAS project that deals with eurosceptic parties in preparation for the European elections on May 25, 2014 . According to Lange, their destructive slogans must be countered by the values ​​of a common Europe: the common market is the source of prosperity. Economic and political integration secure the European way of life of freedom, rule of law and democracy.

Nico Lange advocates pan-European suffrage in the European Parliament elections . Since 2014 he has headed the working group “Future of People's Parties”. He is a member of the CDU reform commission “My CDU 2017”. He oversees a number of publications on party reforms and has published 12 theses on the reform of popular parties.

Head of the KAS field office in Washington

In January 2017, Nico Lange was appointed head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation's international office in Washington DC. Immediately after taking up his new post, he dealt with the inauguration and person of the new US President Donald Trump in current publications .

In the State Chancellery of Saarland

By resolution of the Saarland state parliament on December 4, 2017 with the votes of the CDU and SPD, the function of an agent for innovation and strategy was created in the state chancellery. Shortly afterwards, Prime Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) announced that Nico Lange should take over this position and that she is pleased "that in Nico Lange we have been able to win an experienced strategist and a well-connected politician for our country".

In the federal office of the CDU in Germany

After the Prime Minister of Saarland Kramp-Karrenbauer became Secretary General of the CDU, she brought her close confidante from the Saarland State Chancellery to the CDU headquarters in Berlin. Since mid-April 2018, Lange has been Deputy Federal Managing Director of the CDU and heads the “Planning” department, which is responsible, among other things, for strategy, opinion polls, writing speeches and monitoring political opponents.

In the Federal Ministry of Defense

In August 2019, Lange followed Kramp-Karrenbauer to the Federal Ministry of Defense , where he became head of the management team.
