Ukrajinska Pravda

Ukrajinska Prawda ( Ukrainian Українська правда , Russian Украинская правда , literally Ukrainian truth ) is a popular Ukrainian online newspaper founded by Heorhij Gongadze in April 2000 .

The newspaper was created in response to the increasingly difficult situation for Ukrainian journalists to work independently under the Leonid Kuchma government . In order to avoid censorship, she turned to the Internet . Ukrajinska prawda was primarily characterized by critical reporting on the high level of corruption among the leading politicians and quickly attracted enemies from the country's economic and political elite.

Heorhij Gongadze, the founder and contributor to the project, disappeared in September 2000 after contacting the Interior Ministry to report that he was being monitored and persecuted. His body was found beheaded two months later, which led to great turmoil among the Ukrainian population and ultimately resulted in the cassette scandal surrounding President Leonid Kuchma.

Ukrajinska Pravda played a major role in the preparation and implementation of the Orange Revolution during the presidential elections in 2004. She was one of the last remaining independent reporters and, unlike the state television stations, published the results of the parallel vote counting of the opposition and foreign election observers .

After the events of the Orange Revolution, the online newspaper sees itself to this day as an advocate of the “orange” ideas and pursued a course critical of the government even during Viktor Yushchenko's presidency .

At the moment (Aug 2018) the Ukrajinska Prawda is divided into several headings, some of which have their own names and are further subdivided, the most important of which are: Politics, Economy (Ukrajinska Prawda), Life, Europe (Jewropejska Prawda), Historical Pravda (Istorytschnna Pravda), 2019 elections and blogs from across the political and cultural spectrum.

Today's (2016) editor of Ukrajinska Prawda is Olena Prytula . Her friend, journalist and UP employee Pawel Sheremet , was murdered by a bomb in her car on July 20, 2016.

Inspired by the Ukrajinska Prawda, other important Ukrainian analytical online newspapers were later created. The most important three go back to political-cultural groups and publications in Lviv in terms of personnel and subject matter : Zaxid.net , Zbruč and Postup.
