UN Security Council resolution 435

On September 29, 1978 the United Nations Security Council called in Resolution 435 for the withdrawal of the illegal administration of South Africa in Namibia . Power is to be transferred to the people of Namibia with the help of the UN. Reference was made to Security Council resolution 385 (1976).

The resolution was passed at the 2087th session of the Security Council with 12 votes in favor, no against. The Czechoslovakia and the USSR abstained from voting, China did not take part. The US Secretary of State Cyrus Vance announced that all obstacles to a UN observer mission to the Namibian elections in April 1979 had now been removed.

On March 19, 1989, SWAPO President Sam Nujoma signed a ceasefire agreement with South Africa that paved the way for the implementation of UN Resolution 435.
