UNITRACC

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

UNITRACC is an international information, learning and work platform for specialized civil engineering (line construction, line maintenance and network management). The current main version 2.x has been online since March 31, 2011 and represents the further development of an originally Java-based Internet portal that was initially published in April 2004. UNITRACC is now one of the most extensive and popular internet platforms for technical engineering knowledge worldwide. The editorial support is carried out by Knowledge Factory GmbH in Bochum .

history

In the mid-1990s, sewer and pipeline construction expert Dietrich Stein from RUB had the idea that the sometimes highly complex issues relating to the maintenance of sewer systems could be better conveyed if the contents known from the relevant specialist literature were supplemented with computer animations and interactive illustrations would.

Based on this consideration, in 2000 the engineering company Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein und Partner GmbH produced a multimedia CD that not only contained the complete textbook Maintenance of Sewer Systems by D. Stein, but was also characterized above all by the additionally integrated multimedia illustrations and various possibilities for interaction.

Due to the positive response to this publication, similar implementations for related specialist literature (e.g. from Trenchless Pipeline Construction ) were initially targeted, but it quickly became apparent that the CD as a medium was only conditionally suitable for the most widespread and sustainable communication of the latest Engineering knowledge would be suitable because, for example, with every change in one of the referenced standards, a new CD might have to be distributed.

In this context, attention was drawn to the LERNET research initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) . LERNET was involved in a total of eleven project consortia with the development of network-based learning solutions for medium-sized companies and public administrations. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stein und Partner GmbH was able to launch the Go2Learning research project here.

Go2Learning was supposed to create a web-based teaching, learning and working platform for the German construction industry in order to support both mandatory classroom teaching and independent, self-organized learning. Go2Learning was designed for field pipeline and sewer construction, relying in part to the internationally recognized textbooks maintenance of sewage systems and grave Loser pipeline .

The unique selling points of this new internet portal were the numerous 3D visualizations of various real problems and construction processes as well as the provision of virtual simulations for interactive learning. The whole thing was given the name UNITRACC ( acronym for "Underground Infrastructure Training and Competence Center").

In the course of the next few years, UNITRACC's offer was gradually expanded: In addition to industry news and schedule overviews, specialist articles, instructions for action and construction site documentation for specialized civil engineering were gradually made available on a single website.

On March 31, 2011, a technically completely revised version 2.0 of UNITRACC was finally published and in the course of this relaunch extensive innovations regarding the freely usable content came into force: After a free registration, users now not only have access to the industry news and specialist articles, but you also get unlimited insight into the various specialist information systems (specialist books and treatises) and the associated multimedia additions (videos, animations, virtual construction sites).

Content

UNITRACC offers its users the latest information on all aspects of sewer and pipeline construction. The range of information offered ranges from the topic of water supply and development aid to the area of product presentation and research to strategic analysis within the framework of sewer management measures.

In addition, registered users have free access to numerous tables and online tools that are intended to make everyday office life easier for engineers, as they can shorten the frequent look-up in extensive and confusing print editions and speed up complex calculations.

Another focus of UNITRACC is the establishment of an online academy for specialized civil engineering: With the help of bookable e-learning modules, specialists from Germany and abroad are to be trained in various subject areas of civil engineering.
