The USS Comstock (LSD-45) is a dock landing ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Whidbey Island class . It was named after Comstock Lode , a mine in Nevada .

history

LSD-45 was commissioned in 1985. In 1986 the ship was laid down at Avondale Shipyard , in early 1988 it was launched and was christened. The Comstock went into service on February 3, 1990.

On its first mission, the Comstock supported the evacuation measures after the eruption of Pinatubo on June 15, 1991. She was also involved in Operation Desert Storm . In 1993 she took part in Operation Continue Hope off Somalia . In 1995 the ship returned to the Persian Gulf, where it enforced the UN resolution against Iraq and took part in maneuvers with Jordanian forces. A similar mission followed at the turn of the year 1997/1998. 2001/2002 the Comstock was used as part of Operation Enduring Freedom . It was also used in the Iraq war in 2003.

In 2006/2007, as part of the ongoing US military presence, the ship went back to the Persian Gulf for a nine-month mission together with the USS Boxer (LHD-4) . In 2008 Comstock took part in the RIMPAC maneuver , and in 2010 it repeated the participation. In 2008/2009, the ship again accompanied the Boxers on a transfer to the Pacific, then in 2011 to the Indian Ocean.
