The USS Rushmore (LSD-47) is a dock landing ship of the United States Navy and belongs to the Whidbey Island class . It was named after the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota .
history
LSD-47 was commissioned in 1985. In 1987 the ship was laid down at Avondale Shipyard , in 1989 it was launched and was christened. The Rushmore entered service on June 1, 1991.
On her first mission in 1992, the Rushmore landed in Operation Restore Hope troops on the coast of Somalia . After the end of the mission in 1993, the ship was originally not supposed to move again until 1995. However, with an advance warning of just four weeks, this was brought forward by almost a year. On this voyage, the Rushmore supported Operation Support Hope , which provided humanitarian aid to those affected by the genocide in Rwanda . After another relocation in 1996, the ship was equipped as a smart ship in 1997 . Technologies for the San Antonio class were tested as part of the Gator 17 program .
In the next relocation, the Rushmore operated in 1999 with allies in the Middle East. In late 2004, she moved alongside the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) to take part in the Iraq War. After the seaquake in the Indian Ocean , however, the group changed its goal to help the victims in Operation Unified Assistance and to bring relief supplies to the devastated coasts. Later the group set course for the Persian Gulf as planned.
In 2006 , like two years earlier, the Rushmore took part in the RIMPAC maneuver . In 2007 the Iraq war led the ship back into the Gulf, again alongside the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) . A similar mission followed in 2009.
