The USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) was a nuclear submarine and the lead ship of the Ethan Allen-class of the United States Navy . It was named after Ethan Allen , a freedom fighter from the American Revolutionary War .

history

SSBN-608 was commissioned in 1958. On September 14, 1959, the boat was laid down at Electric Boat . After a construction period of well over a year, it was launched and was christened by Mrs. Robert H. Hopkins, a descendant of Allen's. In August 1961, the Ethan Allen was put into service.

On May 6, 1962, the Ethan Allen fired a nuclear missile as part of Operation Dominic . The test, dubbed Frigate Bird, was the only test of a fully operable submarine-launched ballistic missile in the history of the US Navy.

After initially stationed in Europe, the boat was relocated to the Pacific after the Lafayette class boats entered in the 1970s. The Ethan Allen operated there until it was reclassified to the SSN-608 hunting submarine under the SALT I agreement on September 1, 1980 and was mainly used in anti -submarine exercises.

In 1983 the Allen was finally decommissioned and canceled until 1999 in the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard .

Ethan Allen in films and books

Ethan Allen plays an important role in Tom Clancy's novel The Hunt for Red October . It is blown underwater in the book to simulate the sinking of the eponymous Soviet SSBN . However , she does not appear in the film of the same name .
