history

The Mobile was laid down on January 15, 1968 as the third Charleston-class unit in the Newport News Shipbuilding yard and was launched on October 19, 1968. The commissioning of the ship took place on September 20, 1969 under the command of Captain Samuel Lorenz junior. It is named after the city of Mobile in the state of Alabama .

From 1970 to 1975 the Mobile took part in several missions during the Vietnam War. Among other things, she was part of Operation Frequent Wind in April 1975 for the evacuation of the South Vietnamese capital Saigon .

From the late 1970s, like the other Charleston-class units, the ship was inactive for several years before the class was reactivated in 1982. In the following years the mobile took part in exercises. Another active service use of the ship followed from January 1991 in the Second Gulf War, where it formed an Amphibious Task Force with 17 other units , which was the largest fleet in the United States Navy since the Korean War .

On February 4, 1994, the Mobile was taken out of service after almost 25 years of service and transferred to the reserve fleet of the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia. On August 31, 2015, it was removed from the Naval Vessel Register . The mobile is expected to be scrapped.

The Mobile received several awards for its operations in the Vietnam War and the Second Gulf War . Among other things, she received a total of four Campaign Stars .
