The USS O'Bannon (DD-987) was a the Spruance-class destroyer belonging destroyer of the US Navy , which was made in February 1977 in service. The ship remained in active service until August 2005 before it was sunk as a target ship on October 6, 2005 .
history
The O'Bannon was commissioned on January 15, 1972 as a unit of the Spruance class and laid down on February 21, 1977 in the shipyard of Ingalls Shipbuilding . The ship was launched on September 25, 1978 and entered service on December 15, 1979. The destroyer was named in honor of USMC officer Presley O'Bannon , who lived from 1776 to 1850.
The O'Bannon was originally stationed at Naval Base Charleston and was assigned to Naval Station Mayport due to the closure of the base , which remained home port until it was decommissioned in 2005. In the first years of service, the ship took part in various training missions, including the multinational maneuvers UNITAS , BALTOPS and MEF 3-97 . After several attempts to sell the ship to foreign navies, it was decided to finally sink it on October 6, 2008 as a target ship by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Group.
