USS Panay
Three ships of the United States Navy were named USS Panay after the Philippine island of Panay .
- The first Panay was originally a Spanish gunboat , which was acquired in 1899 following the American occupation of the Philippines . It was in use until 1914 and was sold in 1920. The later World War II Admiral Chester W. Nimitz also served on it.
- The second USS Panay (PR-5) was a river gunboat , launched in 1927, and was used on the Yangtze River in China . It was sunk by Japanese forces in the so-called Panay incident in 1937 .
- The third Panay was an auxiliary ship , which was originally used under the name USS Midway (AG-41), but was renamed Panay in 1943 to make the Midway name available for an aircraft carrier .
