The USS Thomas Jefferson (SSBN-618) was an Ethan Allen-class nuclear submarine of the United States Navy . It was named after Thomas Jefferson , the third President of the United States.

history

SSBN-618 was commissioned in 1960 and laid down at Newport News Shipbuilding in early 1961 . After a construction period of just over a year, the unit was launched and was christened by Robert S. McNamara's wife . In early 1963, the Jefferson was put into service.

From December 1963, the Jefferson was stationed in Holy Loch , Scotland, and from there went on patrols for nuclear deterrence . In 1967, after 12 trips, the first overhaul followed, and from 1968 the boat left Rota , Spain.

In 1972 the boat's “Golden Crew” won the Meritorious Unit Commendation . In 1974 the Jefferson was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and stationed in Vallejo, California . In the same year she docked in the Mare Island Naval Shipyard and was overhauled there until 1975.

In 1976, the boat shot down two UGM-27 Polaris for test purposes and carried out further patrols. In 1981, due to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, the missile section of the boat was deactivated and the missile shafts filled with cement. The boat was reclassified as a hunting submarine and received the identification SSN-618 . Until 1985, the Jefferson served mainly for submarine hunting exercises. In April 1986 the boat was taken out of service. In 1998 the demolition was completed as part of the Ship-Submarine Recycling Program in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard .
