UTair flight 471 was a scheduled flight of a Tupolev Tu-134 on March 17, 2007, which suffered severe structural damage after touching down in front of the runway at Samara Airport ( Russia ). Of the 50 passengers and seven crew members, 6 passengers died; 20 people were injured when the plane broke apart.

background

The aircraft was a Tupolev Tu-134 ( aircraft registration RA-65021 ) operated by UTair . On the day of the accident, 50 passengers and seven crew members were on board.

Course of events

The plane was flying to Samara Airport when it hit the ground 400 meters from the runway in thick fog at 10:45 a.m. local time, jumped off from there and then overturned. Six people were killed and 20 injured, although the plane did not catch fire.

Response of the emergency teams

At least 23 people were taken to hospitals in Samara and Tolyatti , six with serious injuries. Six people were trapped in the wreck for three hours before being released. 23 were uninjured, but received psychological support at the airport.

Investigations

After the accident, investigations began. Both flight data recorders could be recovered on the same day and were evaluated to determine the cause of the accident.

The analysis of the data recorder showed that the aircraft had not suffered any apparent technical malfunctions. According to the investigators, both engines ran until the accident. The aircraft was in the landing configuration with the landing gear extended and the flaps at 30 degrees. The aircraft did not catch fire or suffer any damage while it was in the air.

The pilots were sentenced to conditional prison terms by a court. They would not have canceled the approach at the decision height despite zero visibility.

UTair's reaction

Only hours after the accident, UTair issued a statement on the accident. Accordingly, the aircraft was in good technical condition. The cause of the accident would very likely have been the foggy weather. The crew on board would have been very experienced. UTair decided to pay US $ 75,000 for the bereaved of each dead.
