UV filter (water treatment)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So-called UV filters are used to treat water for aquariums , swimming pools , paddling pools or drinking water . To make water sterile , there is the option of irradiation with UV-C light. Due to its higher energy (compared to light in the visible spectrum ), UV radiation can kill bacteria , viruses and all kinds of spores and is therefore also suitable for disinfection instead of chlorine or oxygen . In addition, UV disinfection is used in the treatment of wastewater, e.g. B. in sewage treatment plants , also on an industrial scale for use.

Aquaristics

In the aquarium hobby , a "UV filter" is a chamber illuminated with UV-C light, which is usually connected to the water circuit of the external filter or to a bypass; partly it is also integrated in the filter housing. Despite the name, it is not a filter in technical parlance, as water flowing through the chamber is only irradiated with UV light, which makes water sterile. Other commonly used terms are UV clarifier, UV burner, UV sterilizer.

In addition to this effect, algae (floating algae) in the water are also killed and fine dirt particles clump together in the water so that they can be better removed by the actual filter of the aquarium. This will make the water clearer, which is often the main reason to install a UV filter.

UV filters are available in different strengths and sizes to match the size of the pool. The UV-C lamps must be replaced after a certain period of time.
