The Akkerendam Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in South Africa .

It is located about 3 kilometers north of the town of Calvinia , Hantam municipality , in the Northern Cape district . The nature reserve is 2,750 hectares and lies at an altitude of 1,000 m. It was established on September 12, 1962 and is operated by the Hantam Municipality.

It is a designated bird sanctuary with around 65 different species, including:

  • Cinnamon warbler ( Euryptila subcinnamomea ), Kopje warbler
  • Kaoolerche ( Certhilauda albescens ), Karoo Lark
  • Booted eagle ( Hieraaetus pennatus )
  • Black Harrier ( Circus maurus ), Black Harrier
  • Alariogirlitz ( Serinus alario )
  • Malachite nectar bird ( Nectarinia famosa ), Malachite Sunbird
  • Layard tit-singer ( Parisoma layardi ), Layard's warbler
  • Elven singer ( Stenostira scita ), fairy flycatcher

In addition to the birds, the flora of the Hantam Mountains is protected, including:

In addition to birds and small mammals, the fauna of the nature reserve contains various antelope species and reptiles such as Pachydactylus labialis.

Two hiking trails cross the nature reserve. The Karebook Trail, which runs at the foot of the Hantamberge, is a short 3-kilometer path; the Steerboom Trail is significantly longer and takes 7 hours.
