UV oxidation

UV oxidation refers to an oxidation process that combines UV light and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ). The primary reactions have already been described by Haber and Willstätter and identify the formation of OH radicals as an essential reaction mechanism . These radicals are considered to be the strongest radicals that exist in the aqueous system, which explains the strong oxidizing effect of UV oxidation.

UV oxidation is of technical importance in water treatment (e.g. as an advanced oxidation process ) or in organic synthesis (e.g. introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups into organic compounds). The importance of UV oxidation in water treatment and the elementary reactions are described in the literature. UV oxidation is used in particular for cleaning pollutants that are difficult to biodegrade or that are not biodegradable (e.g. pesticides , biocides or pharmaceuticals ) in wastewater. Most of the pollutants are mineralized into stable inorganic compounds such as H 2 O, CO 2 and salts. Technical applications of UV oxidation are described in particular for industrial wastewater from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
