Ukrainian colorful steppe pig

The Ukrainian colorful steppe pig ( Ukrainian Українська степова ряба Ukrajinska stepowa ryaba ) is a fat pig breed from Ukraine .

Breeding history

Under the direction of LK Greben, selected sows of the Ukrainian white steppe pig breed were crossed with boars of the Berkshire pig and Mangalica pig breeds in Askanija-Nowa in Cherson Oblast . In 1961 the breed was officially recognized.

Characteristics

  • Color black-tabby (colored), black-red-tabby or rarely black
  • similar in type to the Ukrainian white steppe pig
  • Weight sows 238 kg, boars 322 kg
  • Time up to 100 kg: 186 days
  • Hardness and adaptability to the hot continental climate of southern Ukraine (better than the Ukrainian white steppe pig)

There are 9 boar lines and 18 sow families.

Occurrence

The main breeding center is Askanija-Nowa . The breed is also kept in Kherson Oblast and Mykolaiv Oblast . In 1980 the total number was 5,800 purebred animals.
