It is a painless ulcer in which pathogens can be detected en masse and which is therefore highly contagious. The raised, rough ( Latin durum = "hard") edge is typical . The regional lymph nodes can swell (satellite boubo), but are painless and can be moved. After about two to six weeks, this ulcer will heal with scarring. However, the infection persists and progresses to stage II disease.

Genital herpes or ulcus molle are also possible differential diagnoses .
