Ulrich Hesse
Ulrich "Uli" Hesse , also ~ Hesse-Lichtenberger , (born February 8, 1966 in Dortmund ) is a German sports journalist and author .
Life
Hesse studied English and German at the Ruhr University in Bochum, the subject of his master's thesis was " Baseball and American Myths ".
After his studies he worked as a freelance journalist for numerous German magazines and newspapers (including Süddeutsche Zeitung , taz , Rolling Stone , soccer magazine Hattrick). But he was best known for his reporting on German football in foreign media. From February 1996 Hesse wrote for the British soccer magazine FourFourTwo , six years later he published the first book in English that dealt extensively with the history of German football (" Tor! The Story of German Football "). Between 2002 and 2016 he wrote more than 400 columns for the American website ESPN FC. The column at the end of the season, in which Hesse has been researching every year since 2003 whether the Bundesliga continues to be the league with the most goals per game - and why - was particularly popular.
Hesse worked for a year as editor-in-chief of the German edition of the official UEFA magazine on the Champions League ("Champions", later "Champions Matchday") and subsequently worked as an advisory editor for the English edition until the publication was discontinued in 2015. He has been part of the editorial team of the German magazine 11Freunde since autumn 2016 . Two of his German-language books were nominated by the German Academy for Football Culture for the "Football Book of the Year" award. His English-language book about Borussia Dortmund , " Building the Yellow Wall ", won the British Sports Book Award 2019 in the football category.
Until October 2009, Hesse published under the name Hesse-Lichtenberger.
He is a member of the German Academy for Football Culture.
