Ullahau
Ullahau or Ulla Hau , is a nature reserve and Natura 2000 area on the Swedish island of Fårö , which includes a partially forested sand dune area with a rich insect fauna.
Ullahau is located on the Avanäset peninsula in the northeast of Fårö. It is a large drifted sand area with sand made up of quartz and feldspar . Because there is no lime there, in contrast to most of the rest of Gotland, the vegetation also differs from the vegetation that is usual on Gotland. Ulla Hau is the largest parabolic dune in Sweden and has the shape of a horseshoe that opens to the north and is approximately 300 meters wide in the south. To the east, the dune reaches a height of about 15 meters above the surrounding area. The arch of the dunes encloses an area approximately 1.3 kilometers wide. From this area, the wind has blown away the sand from which the dune is built, so there is mainly coarse sand and gravel, while the finer sand has mainly become part of the dune.
Ullahau probably began to form in the 18th century and initially hiked at about three meters per year. Towards the end of the 19th century, the area was planted with Scots pine , birch and beach grass. The dune hike therefore ended at the beginning of the 20th century. Large parts of Ullahau are now covered with pine forest.
The dune area is 145 hectares, of which open and semi-open sand areas occupy almost ten hectares. The nature reserve was designated in 1966.
The open sandy areas have a very special, dry microclimate because they are exposed to strong sunlight and the wind. Even the low occurrence of moisture-binding plants and the thin cover of humus contribute to the drought, which offers a habitat for warmth and drought-loving insect species, including stinging voices . Another species, the locust sand wasp, is found only on Gotland and Fårö in Sweden and Ullahau is one of four areas on Fårö and three more on Gotland where it occurs.
